Our Mission & Story

Helping Protect Tempe's Historic Places

Our Mission & Story

Mission

The Tempe Historic Preservation Foundation works to preserve and advocate for Tempe’s at risk historic properties and heritage sites while building public support for local historic preservation through education programming, community engagement and fundraising as a 501c3.

Origin Story

Our foundation was formed in 2005, spearheaded by neighbors Darlene Justus and Evelyn Hallman, after becoming concerned by the deteriorating condition of the historic Eisendrath House in their neighborhood. Following a successful campaign to revitalize this historic community property, the foundation has worked closely with the city and other local agencies to advocate for vulnerable historic sites and resources that help define Tempe’s identity and rich history including our Desert Preserve System, Historic Neighborhoods, Indigenous Tribal heritage and historic buildings along with other local cultural resources.  The foundation’s mission continues on today to help ensure that local history has a place within our community.
